‘Digging for Gold’ is a book about a young man named Frank Allfrey who lives in England with his greedy uncle. His uncle, who does not approve of Frank's chosen profession of painter, sends him to California to become a clerk. The business in California fails, and Frank must make his fortune by gold-panning. He is joined by Joe Graddy, a kind old sailor who had also worked at the firm. They have many adventures on the way, make several friends and eventually Frank gets his fortune, though from an unexpected quarter..
