Strauss' treatment of the reasons for the obfuscation of esotericism in late modernity. Mainly a discussion of Lessing and his "conversion"; for Lessing was the thinker who conducted a very public discussion of 'esotericism' in the wake of the Enlightenment.
Supposedly this is the first part of a larger essay of December 1939 that has remained fragmentary.
