A series of essays written by Voltaire, a French Enlightenment writer and philosopher famous for his wit and for his advocacy of civil liberties; based on his experiences living in England between 1722 and 1734. Twenty four letters represented England to a keen French reader: English Church, religion, political system and government, parliament and trade, philosophy, science and literature. Voltaire described wise form of English government, British religious tolerance, idealizing the political system. He was the first, who introduced new philosophy of John Lock to his compatriots, as well as physics of Newton and English theatre; and made the name of Shakespeare known in France. “Letters on England”, published in 1733 had a great success, but evoked discontent of the authorities. The book was sentenced and burnt by an executioner.
