The Art of Poetry an Epistle to the Pisos

Book cover
Quintus Horatius Flaccus was a major Roman lyric poet during the time of Augustus. His father was able to send Horace to Athens to study Greek and philosophy. After Julius Caesar was assassinated Horace joined the army and served under Brutus. The satires and epistles are very personal works and are quite accessible to contemporary readers. The Ars Poetica is a separate epistle in which Horace gives his theory on poetry. He states that poetry must carefully be worked out with semantic and formal qualities. He further states that poetry must be wholesome as well as pleasant. His works are written in Greek metres from the hexameter, which were easily adapted into Latin. His more complex measures used in the odes were difficult to fit into Latin structure
