John Boyle O'Reilly was an important figure in the Irish Republican Brotherhood, the Fenians. He served two years in English prisons and in 1868 was transported to Australia for his republican activities. Having escaped from that country after a little more than a year he took up residence in the United States. O'Reilly, who became an American citizen, and the other authors were all literary notables of the Boston area.
