This is the story of the author’s walk from Cleveland to Los Angeles in 1884-1885, written by Charles F. Lummis. Considered by now the first rank of American traveler, he undertook a143-day journey, in which he developed an intimate familiarity with the American west. His journalistic correspondences during the trip were compiled in the book “A Tramp across the Continent”. (1892). In this work Lummis combined the skill and instinct of a journalist with a deep love of the country. He not only tried to write a detailed guide-book, but also hoped to create a sympathetic attitude toward cultures and customs of the people he met during the trip.
