1885. Lilly first examines the intellectual movement termed Modern Thought and asks if religious faith any longer possible? or has Modern Thought dealt it a fatal blow? He then turns his attention to John Henry Newman's spiritual history and how his experience, unlike that of Schopenhauer, has led him to believe in God. In the Third Chapter he reviews the great non-Christian systems in the world and then indicates their position in respect of Christianity.
