tales and novels of j de la fontaine volume 01

Book cover
A collection of short novellas by Jean de La Fontaine, the most famous French fabulist and one of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century. He is best known for his Fables choisies, mises en vers, published in twelve books from 1668 to 1693. This book includes a brief biographical overview of the author along with his preface to the volume, and begins with “Joconde”, written in light and elegant verse. La Fontaine’s novellas are frivolous, flavored with slight wit and gallant periphrases; some of them are just several verse lines. They are more like anecdotes, with unexpected logical twists, such as the “Sister Jane.”
