De Windt Harry
Captain Harry Willes Darell de Windt (9 April 1856, Paris - 30 November 1933, Bournemouth) was the aide-de-camp to his brother-in-law Charles Brooke, Rajah of Sarawak (Harry's sister Margaret was Brooke's wife), and is best known as an explorer and travel writer. His books were published under the name of Harry de Windt. Harry de Windt was the son of Captain Joseph Clayton Jennyns de Windt, of Blunston Hall, Highworth. He was admitted to Magdalene College, Cambridge in 1875, but did not take a degree, travelling with his brother-in-law from 1876 to 1878.[1] He was married several times, his first wife was Frances Laura Arabella Long, sister to the 1st Viscount Long of Wraxall, whom he married in London in 1882. They were divorced in 1888. There was one child from this union, a daughter, Margaret Maude. Harry married (2ndly) Hilda Frances E Clark in 1899. She died in 1924. In 1927 Harry married the actress Charlotte Elizabeth Ihle, better known by her stage name, Elaine Inescourt.

PETERSBURG. Monsieur Demetrius Kamorski, Inspector- General of his Imperial Majesty's prisons in Siberia, is about as unlike the typical Russian prison official (as represented in England) as can well be. I expected to find an austere, elderly individual, hardened, if not brutalized, by years of contact with criminalsa vulgar, dictatorial man, sly as a fox and as close as wax. I am somewhat surprised therefore when received, on calling at his bright, cheerful apartments near the " Nevski Prospect," by a genial, pleasant-looking gentleman, about thirty-five years old, with laughing blue eyes and a fair moustache. M. Kamorski is fashionably attired in a light grey suit, varnished boots, and wearsa gardenia in his button-hole. We converse for a while on indifferent topics; but my host seems far more inclined to discuss the merits of this year's Derby winner, or Sarah Bernhardt's latest Parisian " success," than to refer to my impending visit to the grim establishment under his super- MONSIEUR DEMETRIUS KAMORSKI. vision. But M. Kamorski can work as well as play, as Government reports will testify. During his ten years' administration under the new rdgime, the prisons of Old Siberia are a thing of the past, and his name, among both political and criminal exiles, is a by-word for integrity and justice. " The papers authorizing you to visit the prisons of Tomsk, Tobolsk, and Tiumen will be ready in ten days," says my host, while tea and cigarettes are served by a Japanese attendant, who accompanied the inspector to St. Petersburg after his last tour through the most remote prison districts, barely a ten days' journey from Japan. Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III HOLY MOSCOW Moscow is about as far from Petrograd as London from Dundee, and you generally travel by the night mail, which is immaterial so far as passing objects of interest are concerned. For the tortuous line originally designed to accommodate commercial and social centres was ruthlessly condemned by Nicholas I., who, with the sole object of shortening the journey for his own convenience, called for the plans, and with pencil and ruler drew a straight line between the two cities. The stations are therefore often a considerable distance from the adjoining town, to the serious inconvenience of its inhabitants. The ancient Muscovite city covers an enormous extent of groundless by reason of its population (about one and a half millions) than owing to the fact that its squares, streets, parks and gardens are on such a vast scale, while the town stretches over a series of undulating hills, which render it a pleasing contrast to flat, monotonous Petrograd. My first impressions of the place were rather vague, for it would need at least a month to fully appreciate the features of historical and artistic interest which, at every turn, confront a stranger. There is, at first, a sense of incongruity, for modern thoroughfares and handsome buildings are promiscuously mingled with wooden shanties and mean-looking alleys, while portions of the city present more the appearance of a provincial town, or even village, than that of a great national centre. Only the principal streets are asphalted, others are of cobbles, with plank side-walks; some not paved at all, for even Moscow presents in places the untidy, unfinished appearance of all other Russian towns, with the exception of Odessa. Excerpt: "Many who read the following account of our long land journey will not unnaturally ask: "What was the object of this stupendous voyage, or the reward to be gained by this apparently unnecessary risk of life and endurance of hardships?" I would reply that my primary purpose was to ascertain the feasibility of constructing a railway to connect the chief cities of France and America, Paris and New York. The European Press was at the time of our departure largely interested in this question, which fact induced the proprietors of the Daily Express of London, the Journal of Paris, and the New York World to contribute towards the expenses of the expedition. Another reason is one with which I fancy most Englishmen will readily sympathise—viz., the feat had never before been performed, and my first attempt to accomplish it in 1896 (with New York as the starting-point) had failed half way on the Siberian shores of Bering Straits."
