Ritchie Anne Thackeray
Anne Isabella, Lady Ritchie, neé Thackeray (9 July 1837 – 1919) was an English writer. She was the eldest daughter of William Makepeace Thackeray. Anne Isabella Thackeray was born in London, the eldest daughter of William Makepeace Thackeray and his wife Isabella Gethin Shawe (1816-1893). She had a twin sister, Jane, who died at eight months, and a younger sister, Harriet Marian (1840-1875). She spent her childhood in France. She married her cousin Richmond Ritchie in 1877. In 1863, Anne Isabella published The story of Elizabeth with immediate success. Several works followed: In other writings, she peculiarly used old folk stories to depict modern situations and occurrences, such as Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood. She also published the following novels:

Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III Arrival In India And Social Life At Calcutta Lord Amherst took with him to India his wife, his son Jeff (whose acquaintance we have already made), and his daughter Sarah. The party started from Southampton on March 15, 1823, in the Jupiter, seventy-four guns. Lord Amherst was only just recovering from serious illness, and the early part of the voyage was one of great suffering. His horoscope was certainly not propitious to his fortunes as a traveller, for in an excursion from Funchal a kick from a horse sent the convalescent Governor- General back to his bed. Later they called at Santa Cruz and at Rio de Janeirodoing ample justice at both places to the marvels and beauty of the tropical scenery. At Rio they found the King of Portugal, and for a second time Lord Amherst made the acquaintance of that singular Court. On July 18, 1823, they reached Madras, landing in state. Lady Amherst describes the scene: ' Lord A1nherst walked with the members of Government into the Fort; Sarah and I got into a carriage and four, andproceeded to Ameer Baugh, a palace of the Nabob of the Carnatic which he had lent to us, ... A day was fixed for Lord Amherst to receive the Nabob with much state and ceremony. The potentate arrived with hia body-guard, in a splendid low carriage, almost all glass, drawn by four white horses, and accompanied by a brother and an uncle.' Lord Amherst embraces them all and exchanges courteous civilities by means of an interpreter. The Nawab was blessed ' with a pleasing countenance and manner,' says Lady Amherst. Excerpt from book: MY TRIUMPHAL ARCH I BEGAN life at four or five years old as a fervent Napoleonist. The great emperor had not been dead a quarter of a century when I was a little child. He was certainly alive in the hearts of the French people and of the children growing up among them. Influenced by the cook, we adored his memory, and the textit{concierge had a clock with a laurel wreath which from some reason kindled all our enthusiasm. As a baby holding my father's finger I had stared at the second funeral of Napoleon sweeping up the great roadway of the Champs Elys6es. The ground was white with new-fallen snow, and I had never seen snow before ; it seemed to me to be a part of the funeral, a mighty pall indeed spread for the obsequies of so great a warrior. It was the snow I thought about, though I looked with awe at the black and glittering carriages which came up like ships sailing past us, noiselessly one by one. They frightened me, for I thought there was a dead emperor in each. This weird procession gave a strange importance to the memory of the great emperor, and also to the little marble statuette of him on the nursery chimney- piece. It stood with folded arms contemplating the decadence of France, black and silent and reproachful. France was no longer an empire, only a kingdom just like any other country; this fact I and the cook bitterly resented. Besides the statuette there was a snuff-box, belonging I know not to whom, that was a treasure of emotional awe. It came out on Sundays, and sometimes of an evening just before bed-time.
