A dispute against the English popish ceremonies, obtruded upon the Church of Scotland
In 1637 Charles I attempted to impose an Anglo-Catholic worship service on the Scottish people. Gillespie's work became the doctrinal defense of the Scottish Presbyterians. So powerful were his arguments that the civil government banned and burned the book. English Popish Ceremonies still has much to say against unbiblical forms of worship which intrude into the church today.
