Coastal Karnataka Calling!!! Tourism & the Coastal Investors's Meet-Dec 2003

Book cover
Investors Meets are key spaces for engagement between potential investors and state governments. Karnataka’s three coastal districts; Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada are being positioned as the country’s most sought after business destinations. Around two years back, Karnataka as a potential for investment was showcased at the Global Investors Meet (GIM) in Kerala. As a follow-up to the feedback received, the State Government replicated this mega investment exercise exclusively for the coastal region. Among the sectors interested in investment, Tourism promoted the coastline as ‘pristine’, ‘untouched’, ‘virgin’ and ‘ready for discovery’. This raises concern over the extent and manner of tourism development to take place in this ecologically fragile region. The Government of India, has agreed in principle to the setting up of Coastal Economic Zones (CEZs) on the line of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) along the 320km long Karnataka coastline. In addition to this, the ex-tourism minister DB Inamdar stated that the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) regulations should be relaxed to exploit the coast’s potential as has been done in Goa and Kerala. This publication is a compilation of articles that have appeared in news media and electronic media about the Coastal Karnataka’s Meet to build awareness towards protection of the coast and regulation of development.
