The changes in the land use pattern, increase in commodity prices, and decrease in availability of traditional job opportunities due to tourism development affect men and women differently. Further, market forces have increased the atrocities on women without producing enough opportunities for better status, employment, income, education, training and health. Tourism development has fuelled another dimension of abuse âsex tourismâ.This dossier is a compilation of articles - from the idea of self-realization and empowerment of women in tourism destinations in India, South Asia and South-East Asia, effects of market-driven and export-oriented development models in tourism, lack of prioritisation of the role of women in tourism and more. The aim is to draw attention to the wide array of impacts of tourism. Aimed at individuals, academicians, activists, groups and institutions that work on gender and women issues, it is hoped this will take forward debate at national level and influence policies and legislation on women and tourism.
