This paper presents a general view of termites in urban areas in southeast Brazil. The large city of Sao Paulo is taken to exemplify the diversity of native termites preserved in urban areas, and to discuss the complexity of the urban environment associated to the actual prominent infestation of the subterranean termite, Coptotermes gestroi (previously under the name C. havilandi, now considered a junior synonym of C. gestroi).
