Thanks to ERM Foundation for providing 79,931.74RMB that, with the local community and government contribution of 148,800RMB, provided a running water project that currently benefits 1,746 Tibetans in Tsanak Village, Gomang Township, Guinan County, Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, PR China. The funding was used to pay for water pipes, cement, bricks, and transportation. Ninety-five locals contributed 30 days of labor to dig ditch, burying pipes, carry project materials, transporting sand and stone so on. Tsanak is a large herding community situated on the grassland in Guinan County. Local residents live across a broad area and many must travel at least 1.5 kilometers to reach the next home. For generations, locals got water from sources that required travel of 12 to 18 kilometers roundtrip from their households. This sometimes required a day or a night. About 152 households (912 people) with 21,000 head of livestock got water from a salty spring and 2 water sources that locals believed caused abdominal illnesses. The water sources are muddy when it rains and icy in winter. These water sources sometimes run dry for 1 to 2 days and locals then had to drive their livestock to another village 18 kilometers roundtrip. This tired the livestock, especially, the sheep. There was also significant grassland degradation from the number of livestock driven across the grassland. There was frequent conflict in getting water because livestock graze on others' pastures to and from the watering places. Water was fetched by people carrying plastic containers on their backs and by using motorcycles. This project has solved all the aforementioned problems. There are 13 water taps in the area that greatly reduce the distance and time locals invest in obtaining water, as well as reduced grassland degradation and conflict over grazing. The benefits of this project are many and are bringing much positive change to the village.
