Very few attempts are made to examine the experience and role of women in tourism. The larger debate on tourism impacts on women is still limited to women being portrayed as sex objects or sex work. It is seen that âhostâ communities in Indian tourism destinations are not consulted when their resources are coveted for tourism development. This deprivation of land, water and access to public places exerts pressure on women in these communities the most. Inflated prices of goods due to direct competition with the purchasing power of tourist establishments impact the women in maintaining their households. It seems that women are forgotten in this quest for âdevelopmentâ.. This compilation of 13 articles covers a range of issues that have a direct bearing on women in the tourism sector.
