The Shambala Connection provided 4,282.65RMB to purchase Tibetan and Chinese language books for Karmatang Tibetan Primary School Library (located in Guiâde County, Qinghai Province, PR China), which is in Karmatang Village. The school provided a room, stools, desks and the bookshelves. The school paid 115RMB for half of the book transportation fee. All the villageâs 90 families (~ 400 people) are Tibetan. The school has 50 students, four teachers and six grades. The village depends on farming. The goals of the project were to give the students a resource for reading and the teachers a resource for teaching; encourage villagers and students to learn the importance of education; preserve and encourage use of the Tibetan language and culture; reduce the low literacy rate amongst village children; improve studentsâ reading and writing skills; and to give village young people more future options in life. A student commented on the new library: âI think the books are very interesting and easy to understand. We can improve our writing and reading skills by reading both Tibetan and Chinese books. The dictionaries solve the biggest problems that we are encountering - the hard new words and expressions in our homework.â [ Karmatang Village > Xinggai Township > Guide County > Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture > Qinghai Province > PR China]
