Military Professions: a three-dimensional analytic model

Book cover
The most usual models for describing the military professions, or to analyze the military organizations as professional communities rely on oppositions along one single dimension (the best known example is Mosko's I/O model). I propose here, based on ethnographic observations of Portuguese Army a two-dimensional model that expands into a three-dimensional one. I first define the two dimensions that oppose: (i) "management" (or administrative functions) to "operational" (or troop command functions), and (ii) "staff" (or informational & political functions) as opposed to "technical" (engineering, technology oriented functions). Finally, I introduce the dimension of hierarchy and or power (within the military institutions). The hoped outcome is a better understanding of the structure of military culture, within the organization and in it's relationship to the global society.
