This being something other than a predictable thriller, however, the foreseeing spoils nothing, and Luce is self-reliant enough not to need rescuing — or a love interest. Much more interesting than romance is the bad guy. Bud is an arrogant menace, savvy enough to identify and cultivate people who can help him learn the location of Luce and the twins. But Frazier throws in a delicious plot twist: Bud has failed to take into account the likelihood that everybody in a small community knows everybody else, and that residents are apt to play more than one role.
