Peter Stuyvesant, the Last Dutch Governor of New Amsterdam

Book cover
As all of us know from the history, Christopher Columbus in 1492 reached the coast of San Salvador which belongs to the group of West India islands and this was the discovery of a new world. A couple of years later a famous traveler Sebastian Cabot reached the continent of North America. In this book he focuses on the history of New Amsterdam and on such personality in it as Petrus Stuyvesant (1612-1672). Since 1647 he was a governor of the colony of New Netherlands and came back home in 1664. He also played a great role in the early history of new York City. During all these years Stuyvesant completed a lot, for example, he enlarged the territory of New Amsterdam till Manhattan. He was also the author of such famous projects of New York City as wall on the Wall Street, the canal that later turned into Broad Street, and also the construction of Broadway. The family of Stuyvesant possessed a big part of land in New Amsterdam and some of the places there (like high school, for example) are named in his honor. Besides technical questions and projects, Stuyvesant was involved into the religious problems. In order to preserve the stability of the settlements in the New World he restricted the worship of some religious groups such as Jews, Lutherans, and Quakers. In general the book is very interesting for all readers who are fond of history and of those figures who shaped the history and changed its course.
