The volume comprises poetry of five outstanding personalities, who made lasting contributions to English literature, with memoirs, critical dissertations, and explanatory notes: an eighteenth century English poet, classical scholar and professor at Cambridge University, Thomas Gray; Samuel Johnson - essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer; Scottish poets Tobias George Smollett and George Gilfillan; and one of the so-called "Graveyard poets" - Thomas Parnell.
