This is one of the short books that Ballantyne wrote for the edification and enjoyment of young people who had not much money to spend. It describes the history of ballooning up to the date of writing. Most of the major achievements in this art up to 1869, the date of publication, are mentioned. It is an enjoyable book, though of course not exactly in the usual story-telling style of the author. There were 24 books in this series, each with only about 110 pages of text, and usually with just one picture. Most of the other books Ballantyne wrote had about 400 pages.
