Register or memorial of Ewell, Surrey

Book cover
"Registrum sive memoriale de Ewell" [with English translation at foot of page]: p. [1]-184 The manuscript which has supplied the text is in the possession of Sir Gervas Powell Glyn, bart., of the Rectory house, Ewell, and is a transcript made in the earlier half of the sixteenth century of the original drawn up at the beginning of the fifteenth century. The transcribing and translating of the "Memoriale," barely begun by the late Mr. Edward Fairfax Taylor, were completed, after his death, by the present editor, with help of Mr. Colin Ford, who accomplished the bulk of the transcribing and a considerable part of the translating. Subsequently the Rev. William Hudson examined the transcript and translation with the original, supplied the explanatory notes in the appendix and contributed the sketch on "Early manorial conditions." To Miss Glyn is due the further sketch of "The topography of Ewell," with the attempt to assign the postion of the ancient "furlongs" and the compilation of the two plans. cf. Foreword
