As a project for Prof. Matthew Thibeaultâs Introductory to Music Education
Technologies course at the University of Illinois, Alex Moroz and Jenny Hanson
transcribed the melodies from Tchaikovskyâs Fifth Symphony and transposed them for
standard band and orchestral instruments. We believe that these melodies are beautiful
and should be available for all instrumentalists to play to promote the growth of
musicality among a broader range of musicians. These melodies are available for the
public domain so any musician can expand upon their knowledge and perform a wider
variety of music.
The melodies are organized by movement, starting with the first and ending with
the fourth. The instrumentations for the original melodies are noted at the beginning of
each melody, as well as measures that they are from. We stated these facts in the music
so the performer knows which melody they are playing, and so musicians can listen more
critically when evaluating a performance. Some of the melodies, however, are not direct
transpositions of the melodies, due to the differences of range in some instruments. We
have accommodated for this problem by transposing musical segments up or down an
octave.
We hope that you will take advantage of our arrangements, either for yourself or
your students, and we encourage you to share them with your friends and colleagues!
