In English detective literature a charming adventurer appears in various characters, Jimmie Dale being one of them. This is the first book of the Jimmie Dale series by a Canadian novelist Frank Lucius Packard. In contrast to “evil geniuses”, this hero embodies life in all its complicacy and variability, not being able to go into Procrustean bed of moral code and rules. He is not exemplary, but appears a reminder of the fact, how scanty our attempts to see the world in black and white are. That is why the reader can easily sympathize with him without risking to look defective.
