The Ball and the Cross

Book cover
Evan Maclan is an ardent and fervent young Catholic. Once he is enraged by an editorial he reads in ‘The Atheist’ and reveals his anger by breaking the window of the paper's office. Then he challenges the editor, Turnbull, to a duel. The plans of the bickering men are foiled everytime they try to find a suitable place for their fight. While the search goes on they continue their theological debate. But finally they eventually come to terms. They realize that they - the one who actively accepts the existence of God and the other who eagerly denies it - have more in common with each other than with the mass of self-satisfied humanity who could not care less if He exists or not. This is a brilliant story that is the perfect allegory for our times.
