The New Jerusalem is a serious book written by Gilbert Chesterton who rises the religious questions. It is intended for true Catholics, Jews or Muslims but not for people who seem to be religious at the first sight but in fact their vies are a tribute to modern demands of the society. The book is written in understandable and honest language which makes it easier for perception. Chesterton touches the history of Jerusalem explaining the Palestine and Judea (Israel) in early times both were controlled by the Romans and then by the Europeans. He narrates also about the culture, religion and political and social development of the region. He states that the birthplace of Catholicism, Judaism and Islam. Chesterton thinks that the Western countries know too little about the history of the region, thus, it is difficult for them to understand and solve its problems. His research shows that Jerusalem is situated on the crossroads of political and religious differences. He also makes it clear that Protestantism would not have survived in Jerusalem, unlike Islam, Judaism and Catholicism. Chesterton pays a great attention to the influence of World War I on the Middle East. He states that while there was no war there, there was no peace there as well. Great Britain was under the illusion that it would be able to maintain the region in peace like it was before the war. The author makes clear difference between Jewish Nationalism and Judaism as a religion. This is the issue not often understood by the Western politicians. Also sometimes Jews are considered to be representatives of the western society which is not always right. The thoughts in this book are expressed from the point of view of a Catholic. This story is a very good Middle East research explaining the history and the contemporary problems of the region that makes the book a must-have for everyone interested in the region and wishing to make his contribution to solving its problems.
