Thanks to the Tibetan Development Assistance Trust for providing 120,100 RMB. This, plus a local contribution of 3,509 RMB, made possible a school construction project of 123,609 RMB that benefited 420 local Tibetans (113 households). The funds were used to build 3 student dorm rooms, a kitchen, glass enclosed space in front of the rooms, 16 bunk-bed sets, school-yard and gate, and two solar electricity generating panels. The school now has 28 students--a preparatory class, grade one, and grade two classes.
One of the grade-one students; Dejie (b. 1999), said, "My parents planned to send me to school but there were no beds and no stoves for us. We had to sleep on the floor. It was cold in winter and early spring. Because there were no good dorm rooms, we had to walk back and forth everyday. It was a big burden for us to walk such long distances and there are dogs and wolves on the way to school. It is dangerous. So I dropped out. Now, I am happy to return to school and I enjoy studying at this new school, which is comfortable and warm. With the glass rooms in front of the dorm rooms and classrooms, the rooms are warm and comfortable to stay and study in. Additionally, we have stoves and coal and can make a fire to keep warm in winter."
