a white heron and other stories

Book cover
A collection of short stories by Sarah Orne Jewett, a nineteenth century American novelist and short story writer, best known for her local color works set in or near South Berwick, Maine, on the border of New Hampshire, which in her day was a declining New England seaport. The book, published in 1886, includes the author’s most successful works, one of which has given the name to the volume. White Heron tells a story of young forest-dwelling girl who finds herself in a situation of uneasy choice: to help a young charming hunter or to take the blame upon herself for the death of a rare white heron. The story is much of a sensitive, luminous description of nature and the landscape. The collection also includes The Gray Man, Marsh Rosemary, A Business Man, Mary and Martha and some other.
