Mary Jane Holmes was an American writer living in the last half of the 1800's. She began teaching school at age 13. Her novels centered on domestic life. Dora Deane is another variation of the Cinderella story. Dora is orphaned and taken in by a stern aunt. She works in the kitchen while her aunt and cousin use the money that is supposed to go to Dora from an Uncle in India. When Dora helps nurse the wife of the town aristocrat her luck changes. He sends her to Boston where she is educated.
