This is an adventure novel set in 19th century Greece. Along with two British girls, a German student is kidnapped by a famoous bandit who gives the novel its title, "The King of the Mountains". The German student falls in love with one of the English girls, but it turns out that their relationship will not last long. Two times they try to flee, but they are caught and he is tortured by the ruthless bandit and his fellows. They become free after numerous and exotic adventures, and the end is not the typical "happy end". This book is a pure entertainment, without any philosophical implications.
