This book belongs to the pen of Stephen Return Riggs (1812-1883) and his wife, Mary (1813-1869) wh played a great role in the history of the Dakota tribe. Mary and I: Forty Years with the Sioux was published for the first time in 1880 and since then it has gained popularity within a wide circle of readers. The couple spent a long time in Minnesota, South Dakota, and Nebraska serving as Christian missionaries. In addition to their missionary work they performed some work to support the local customs and traditions. They helped a lot with the preservations of the Dakota language translating large parts of the Bible into it and making a list of Dakota words. The book contains two sections. The first part gives a detailed account of the missionary work among the Dakota Indians. The second part includes works devoted to people who work with the Indians.
