the adventures of ebenezer fox in the revolutionary war

Book cover
From his own hand comes the lively, spirited tale of Ebenezer Foxs life, from his meager beginnings in 1770 as a farmhand at age seven through the end of the American Revolution in 1783. This narrative details some remarkable incidents of the war and as such serves the dual role of entertainment and historical record as presented through personal experience. Foxs father was a tailor, and being poor and having a large family, he thought it best to send young Ebenezer to a local farmer where he could work and earn his own keep. There he stayed for five years. As time wore on, however, Ebenezer began to feel he was being unjustly used by the farmer. Figuring to put an end to his oppresion he set out for Providence, Rhode Island with hopes of grand adventures on the high seas. What follows in an account of Foxs life as a cabin boy, a replacement soldier and finally as a sailor aboard an American fighting vessel. He recounts his days with remarkable detail including vivid accounts of the battles he was a part of and his encounters with some of the more famous people of his time such as John Paul Jones and John Foster Williams. He also sheds a striking light on his sufferings aboard the Old Jersey Prison-Ship and he effected his escape. Truly a remarkable tale of a young patriot and his countrys fight for freedom. The book has an appendix containing information on the activities of some of the books characters after the war as well as verses to a popular song and an explanation of some of the terms that may not be familiar to the reader.
