Having moved inward through the organism to find the law, the way is prepared to move outward, and study the organism in light of its genesis under the law. Thus the parts and their functions can best be made to appear in their true relations, and the conditions prepared for the active process to be described in the next chapter, — " The Organism in Executing the Law." The law of unity between the individual's real and ideal self lies back of the formal school organization; and, as before stated, is common to all organizations. It shapes the school as the vital principle shapes the physical organism. The school is the immediate offspring of the rational nature of the individual; it is that nature externalized. Man, having the power to distinguish between his present attainment and his potential good, takes an active part in his own development. Man is held responsible for shaping his own life. In this dual relation of the individual to himself we have both the teacher and the taught, and therefore the school; for the school is the organic unity between the teacher andthe pupil. Teacher and pupil are correlative, twin-born; yea, triple-born, for the school is born with them, being the correlation of the other two. If the school did not thus exist organized in subjective consciousness, it could not exist in objective reality. This fact of self-consciousness, which is the origin and law of the school, is the point of departure in "The Philosophy of Teaching." All managing resolves itself into teaching, and all teaching takes form in managing. The two are the outside and the inside of the same process.
