THE VETERAN'S BRIDE AND OTHER POEMS: STORIES OF THE LATE WAR, first published in 1894 by P.D. Farrell & Co., Publishers of Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a book of Civil War stories and poems authored by Alta Isadore Gould, an early pioneer of Mecosta County, Michigan. Editions one through four include nine original engravings, replaced with stock engravings in the fifth edition. The fifth edition only includes an author's portrait. The book was very popular for its day, going through six printings in four years. It is comprised of five story-length poems and ten shorter poems. The preface was written by Laura Haviland, the Adrian Quaker and abolitionist, who started the first anti-slavery society in Michigan and supervised the operations of the Underground Railroad. This reproduction includes two letters written by Alta Gould to her daughter Lillian, and one letter written to Alta Gould by her mother, Cynthia Chipman. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.
