upper annandale its history and traditions

Book cover
Original orange cloth binding with decorative lettering and printing in black. Written by Agnes Marchbank and published in 1901, this is a regional history Annandale, which is in the central part of Dumfriesshire, bounded by Lanarkshire and Peeblesshire on the north, and the Solway Firth on the south. This history surveys the area from Roman through Scottish medieval times, to the days of the Border wars and forays. It is particularly interesting for its discussion of such families as Wallace, Bruce, Dunbar, Douglas (both the Red and the Black branches), Armstrong, Moffatt, Maxwell, Johnston, Bell, Moray, Crichton, Halliday, and the other great Border families, who all too often feuded with each other and with the authority of both the English and the Scottish kings. There is as well some information on the Knights Templar in Scotland and on the 'Killing Time' of the Covenanters.
