An 1888-1889 novel from an African American abolitionist, lecturer and women's rights activist Frances Ellen Watkins Harper who above all was a prolific and popular writer in practically every genre. She appreciated beauty, she experimented with form and technique, and she enjoyed the accolades of a successful writing career. The major goal of her creations was to “make the songs for the people.”
