South: the story of Shackleton's 1914-1917 expedition
A first-hand experience of an Anglo-Irish explorer Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton, during his disastrous several-year Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. The expedition did not attain its object, however many regions of Antarctic were explored. Misadventures and bad luck that fell to the lot of naval depot, called for firmness and powers of endurance beyond all measure. In severe weather, the crew was thrown out to an uninhabited island, where people decided to set off for the nearest whale-men berthing, seeing how provision, morale and strength are coming to an end. The further events could be envy even for a Hollywood blockbuster: starving, frostbites, amputation in severe arctic conditions, scurvy, hopelessness and triumph – one for all, and every one’s own.
