Starr King in California

Book cover
American history is full of so many heroes that the general public has heard little about. Starr King arrived in California in 1860 at age 35. King was a Unitarian minister, influential in California politics during the American Civil War. King was born in New York and became the sole support of his family at age 15. He studied on his own and became a minister at age 20. He has been called "the orator who saved the nation" because of his impassioned speeches in favor of California remaining a part of the United States. Lincoln credits him with stopping California from becoming a separate republic.
