The author of the story Wayland F. Dunaway was a student of law at the University of Virginia during the time when the war began in 1861. The young man could not stay at home and he was enrolled in the army and took part in the battles of Seven Pines, Mechanicsville, Gaines's Mill, and Frayser's Farm which occurred in 1862. He made a career from Lieutenant to Captain. His memories concerning the war are described in this book of his called Reminiscences of a Rebel. This book is a great source of facts and impressions belonging to the middle of the 19th century.
