The first published book of an American novelist Kathleen Thompson Norris, the author of many popular romance novels that some considered sentimental and honest in their prose. “Mother” appeared in 1911 and became an ultimately influential and acclaimed work, originally a short story submitted to a magazine contest. The story, celebrating a sacrifice to motherhood, revolves around a young heroine, who leaves home to find herself and her place in life.
