Stephen Leacock was an early 20th century Canadian writer and economist. He received a PhD is political science from the University of Chicago. He opposed women's rights and non Anglo-Saxon immigration, however he was a supporter of social welfare legislation. Jacques Cartier was a French explorer who claimed Canada for France. He was born in 1491. In 1532 Cartier was introduced to King Francis I by Jean le Veneur, bishop of Saint-Malo. The bishop told the king of Cartier's voyages to Brazil and Newfoundland to show his ability to lead expeditions to new lands. The king hoped Cartier would find a route to the Far East. Cartier made three voyages in all.
