Erotica Romana

Book cover
Also known as “Roman Elegies,” this book was written by one of the great figures in the history of German literature, a German writer and polymath Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It is a series of poems written during his Italian journey; here the author expresses the sensuality and vigor of Italian and Classical culture, and touches upon sexual themes, what became the reason of suppressing poems from publication during Goethe's lifetime. The central character of elegies is a poet, who sees the world by eyes of a sculptor, who gives himself up to sensual love. This love is treated here as feeling that indicates depravity of human relationships.
