The book narrates about the life of a 17 years old boy named Fred Fenton who has to work very hard to support himself, his mother and his younger brother. From the first pages we see him selling food, journals and books on trains. The family does not have money and they cannot event pay rent for their apartment. The boy decides to travel to other places and cities in search for jobs and money and has to overcome many difficulties. The book gives readers an insight into the life of poor people in America in the 19th century.
