The Shambala Connection provided16,474 RMB that purchased 185 solar cookers to 185 Tibetan households in Sasuma and Dunpeng villages. Before the solar cooker project, in Susama village the villagers walked about 5-6 kilometers to the mountain to collect yak, mule and donkey dung, and 4 kilometers to go near the forest to cut branches secretly. A dung collecting trip took almost took a half day, and collecting branches took 3 hours. The villagers go to collect dung every day in winter, and goes to collect branches once every four or five days. In Dunpeng village, the villagers walked 3-4 kilometers to the mountains to collect yak, cow, mule and donkey dung, wood and roots. A trip took around three-four hours. In summer, the villagers sometimes went about 3 kilometers to cut branches from their own trees. Also some of the villagers sometimes take dung from the animal enclosure to cook food. This dung could be used to fertilize the fields. Now they have a very useful solar cooker. It can cook dishes, potatoes, meat, bread and boil water. The women and girls’ burden is reduced a lot.
