The British Chamber of Commerce (Shanghai) and Bryce Jenner (Big Bamboo, Shanghai; 50,720 RMB), Janet Smith (15,000 RMB), Kathy Callahan (4,000 RMB), and Dr. Barry McQuilken (Marilyn Pennell; 3,000 RMB), provided a total of 72,720 RMB to pipe clean spring water to 267 Tibetan villagers in fifty-one households in Zelong Maga Village, Zaba Township, Hualong Hui Autonomous County, Haidong Region, Qinghai Province, PR China. Before the project, each family spent on average 2-3 hours a day to fetch water. This was a hard everyday burden for village females. Now that they have a plentiful supply of new clean water from taps in their own home yards, the saved time is used on other activities and much deserved free time. Also they can grow vegetables in their home yard, which was not possible before. This new access to water has improved their health condition and also allowed adults who previously had to stay at home to fetch water for old people and children to leave the village to earn additional cash income. The villagers contributed unskilled labour, sand, stones, and 1,400 RMB in cash for the project; they also enthusiastically participated in the project, transporting sand and stone using tractors and on their backs to the work sites, dug ditches, and poured concrete. The project was completed in the autumn of 2008.
