The Water Clock
The Water Clock is the first in a series of atmospheric mysteries by Jim Kelly, and introduces Philip Dryden, a journalist investigating two murders that straddle four decades. It is a remarkably accomplished debut, described by the Sunday Telegraph as ‘a rare combination of poetic writing and a gripping plot’. The novel offers both a deft homage to its genre, and a gentle subversion of it. For while rooted in the English classical crime fiction tradition (it is inspired by Sayers’s The Nine Tailors) – The Water Clock is anything but cosy, with dark, gothic images (a corpse trapped in ice, a body atop Ely cathedral) that imprint themselves on the reader’s mind.
