Jumping spider feet

Book cover
This publication reviews older as well as more recent work on the structure and function of the feet of jumping spiders (Araneae, Salticidae). The ability of these spiders to extend and to retract paired foot pads (as well as claws) is documented. Many illustrations of related SEM work are included. Many spiders possess an elaborate mechanism of presumed van der Waals adhesion, similar to that demonstrated for gecko lizards. In many respects, the structural sophistication and miniaturization of tenent pads and setae are at least as remarkable is spiders as in any other animals.
